Pedro Alexandre Costa

 

Assistant Professor and Researcher at the Sexuality and Gender Group at the Center for Psychology at University of Porto (CPUP), Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences at University of Porto. I graduated as clinical psychologist from ISPA in 2003 and completed a MSc degree in Psychology of Child Development at the University of Central Lancashire in 2016. In 2014 I completed a PhD in Psychology at UBI with a FCT grant. My research was focused on family functioning in lesbian/gay/bisexual families and social attitudes toward these families. During the PhD I completed two visiting fellowships at Birkbeck, University of London. In 2015 I started a post-doc funded by FCT to examine adopted children's adjustment in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and heterosexual families, and was the Principal Investigator (PI; co-PI F Tasker) of a study about adoptive parents and their children in the UK (funded by the British Academy). In the last 5 years I expanded my international research network with collaborations and publications with G Shenkman (Tel Aviv University, Israel), F Salinas-Quiroz (National Pedagogic University, Mexico), and C Hermosa (Universidad de Las Américas, Ecuador) about lesbian/gay/bisexual families and attitudes toward them. I also integrated a research network to study European attitudes toward lesbian/gay/bisexual families, led by S DAmore (University of Liège, Belgium) and R-J Green (Alliant International University, USA), and betwee 2021 and 2024 I served as management committee member of the COST Action CA19103, LGBTI+ Social and Economic (in)equalities. Before my current academic position, I was a researcher and assistant professor at ISPA where I taught master and doctoral-level students on family psychology, LGBT and sex research, and research methods. I have supervised more than 40 MSc research intern and MSc students, supervise(d) 8 PhD students (2 FCT funded) and have participated in more than 80 MSc and PhD juris. I have published more than 6o scientific articles, 31 paper abstracts, 3 conference proceeding papers, 11 book chapters and 2 books. My publications were well received by the scientific community, with over 1,000 citations in Scopus (h-index = 21), and over 2,200 ,citations in GoogleScholar (h-index = 28). My academic profile has also drawn media attention, with participations as a specialist in the most important national radio (e.g, Antena1), TV (e.g., SIC), newspapers (e.g., Público), and magazines (e.g., Visão). I have done more than 80 presentations in (inter)national conferences, given 4 national and international keynote addresses, organized 3 international conferences, 6 national academic events, and have been part of the scientific committee of several conferences. Particularly, I organized the 1st International Conference on LGBT Psychology and the 3rd nternational Conference on LGBT Psychology . I have been a reviewer for several top-tier journals (e.g., Child Dev, Sex Res Social Policy), and have acted as editorial board member for J Homosex and J LGBTQ+ Family, associate editor for Front Psychol, and associate editor and editor-in-chief for Psych Com Health. I have also been involved in different scientific coordination and scholarly activities. I currently serve as a member of the scientific committe of the Masters in Sexology, member of the scientific committe of the Doctoral Program in Human Sexuality, and member of the Ethics Committee at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences at University of Porto.
